I am finally heading to my first movie in Canada. We are going to see The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel--should be fun!

Another good day・いい一日が続く

It was another lovely food day in Surrey, BC. Breakfast was rushed--a latte.

今日も食事のいい一日だった。朝食を食べる時間がなかったのでラッテにした。

Lunch was cheese, spinach, and garlic bruschettas. Pre-toasting...昼食はチース、ニンニクとほうれん草のブルスケッタだった。これは焼く前バージョン。

And pre-eating...with a side salad...yum...食べる前バージョン！きゅうりもおいしかった。

And dinner...delightful fish in white sauce on a bed of spinach with home-made chips on the side. YUM!　夕飯はフィッシュアンドチップス。ほうれん草も一緒だった。ご馳走様！

Out and about・出かけた！

Today I had an appointment so I got to ride the SkyTrain. It is quite different from Japanese trains--there is no conductor and you can use your cell phones to speak while riding the train. I still can't do that...but still.  Riding the train is still a bunch of fun!

今日は朝のアポイントがあってスカイ・トレインに乗った。日本の電車と違うけど乗るが楽しい。日本と違って電車で携帯を使っても平気。私はできないけど。。。後、運転士はない。自動的に動く。ちょっと怖いけど安全だと言われている。

Of course, I headed to Tim Horton's, which has new cup sizes. They have more realistic ideas about how big coffee should be--which is great. 出かければコヒーを飲むでしょう。カナダだからTim Horton'sへ行くべきです。面白いのはサイズが最近変わっている。アメリカだとスモールでも大きい。このサイズはもっと適当かな。

A good day...・いい一日

So far so good...a nice day...It started out with a lovely omlette...

今日は言い一日だった。朝ごはんはオムレツ。。。

And toast and jam (note the excellent and rather rare huckleberry jam) トーストとジャムもいただいておいしかった。

Then I got a cheque from the government--always a good way to start the day... お金がカナダ政府から手に入れて。。。

 And her I am contemplating lunch...それで、昼食もおいしかった！

Who knows what dinner will bring...夕飯はどうなるかな。。。

Lovely gifts...お土産ありがとう。。。

OK, so this upload is pretty late....but better late than never, right? Y was kind enough to bring all sorts of gifts when she visited last month from Japan. We got the greatest socks from Y2...what do you think? 投稿することが遅いけど「遅くともしないよりはまし」だ。Yさんが日本から遊びに来てくれたとき、お土産をいっぱい持ってきてくれた。Y2さんからは可愛い靴下。。。ありがとう。

Y brought some great tea from Korea--I am drinking this cold at the moment...very refreshing. Yさんからはおいしい韓国茶。冷たくてもおいしい！

And this is a great spicy oily topping for rice--L is absolutely addicted! Thanks to all! これはほとんど終わっている。Lが「ラー油おかずぶっかけ」にすっかりはまっている。ありがとう！

インド風中華料理？Indian-style Chinese food?

What is Indian style Chinese food you ask? Well, that is an excellent question. Green Lettuce is a restaurant nearby that promises exactly that kind of food. Not ones to shy away from gastronomic adventures, we checked it out. インド風中華料理ってなーーーに？って聞きたいよね。近くにあるレストランの看板が「インド風中華レストラン」だと書いてあった。レビューが結構よかったからLと入ってみた。彼女は中華料理が大好きだけどインド料理はちょっと。。。これかメニューです。「グリーンレタス」と言うところです。

Diet Coke is so much more appealing in French. カナダだからダイエットコーラもフランス語が付いている。

So here it is. Thai-Indo-style tofu on the left and an interesting mild-curry-Chinese-flavour gyoza on the right. Both dishes were great. This places gets a double thumbs up!  豆腐がなんとなくタイ風とインド風の間中の味？それで餃子はちょっとカレーっぽかった。口がちょっとびっくりだったけどおいしかった！

チャウダー・スープ・Salmon chowder!

The salmon in this area is amazing. L used some of it to make chowder the other day. I thought it was a bit of a waste to use good salmon, but she knows what she is doing...it turned out magnificently! この辺はサーモンがおいしいです。この間Lはおいしいサーモンを使ってチャウダーを作ってくれた。おいしいサーモンを使うとちょっともったいないと思ったけどチャウダーが結局ものすごくおいしかった。

There was corn, onion, potato, and lots of other yummies in there with the salmon. トウモロコシ、ジャガイモ、たまねぎなども入れた。

It was really good. Here's hoping she makes it again! すごーくおいしかった！ご馳走様！

土曜日の朝食は外食・Saturday breakfast out

It's a cloudy Saturday so we thought we'd do something different--obviously involving food. We ate at the A&W again--their breakfasts are pretty fun and it is always nice getting coffee in real mugs! 土曜日だから平日と違うことしたい気持ち。朝ごはんを外食でとることにした。この間のA&Wで食べた。私はコヒー、トースト、ハッシュブラウンと卵フライ。ベーコンはLに食べてもらった。I ate this, minus the bacon. (Thanks, L)

And L had this with lotsa extra bacon.  Lはコヒー、ハッシュブラウン、とベーコンたっぷりの朝サンドにした。

Yeah, yeah...the diet starts tomorrow...おいしかったけどダイエットしなきゃ！

Ah, Friday...金曜日戻った！

金曜日だ！幸せ感じる？超うれしいです！Yes, it's Friday again. Another week slipped passed me. I have a weekend full of work awaiting but for now, here's some healthy and fun Friday shots of...

And finally the best of the bunch: a green tea frappuccino and an afternoon with one of the best books I have ever read.  Ah...heaven!  一番おいしかったのは抹茶フラッパチーノー！飲みながらスターバックスで大好きな本を読んだのは今日の天国の時間だった！週末、楽しもう！

Vancouver International・バンクーバー空港

We took our friends to the airport the other day (begrudgingly). While there, I noticed this odd sign...So the U.S. is a Canadian province now? Schweeeet! この間友達を見送りに、バンクーバー空港まで行った。この看板を見てハッとした！ここはカナダだからほかの国に行くとして国際出発でしょう！米国は違う。。。

There are lots of First Nations art pieces at the airport, which makes it a lovely space. カナダ先住民族の美術や文化などがいっぱい展示されていて、いい空港だと思う。これはどの動物だと思う？

 

 Bill Reid's The Jade Canoe is probably the highlight of the airport--absolutely magnificent. ビル・リードという美術家が作ったジェイド・カヌーが目立っていて空港の感じがあまりしない。

The Jade Canoe is depicted on the reverse of the Canadian $20 bill.ジェイド・カヌーがカナダの２０ドル札の後ろに描いています。

Ah, yes, the British are coming--to take Canadians to the Olympics this summer...ターミナルに入ってイギリスについての広告がいっぱいある。オリンピックとしだからカナダからイギリスまでの直行便が増えると思う。

They even celebrated the British fanfare with a flash mob in May. 私たちがいなかったけど５月にフラッシュモッブもあったそう。

Nando's! 南アフリカのチェーン店に行った！

We found an interesting new place in Surrey the other day. Nando's is a South African chain restaurant that I never actually visited in South Africa because it is mainly meat. But we went for the experience and a bit of South African flavour here in Canada. Once is enough--enough iron to last me a while!     この間、サリー市にある南アフリカのチェーン・レストランで食べた。普通食べないものなのにちょっとおいしかった。南アフリカで経験したことないものだけどカナダで渡来してみようと思った。肉ばかりだから一回で十分です！

The different sauces are one of Nando's signature experiences.

ソースがいっぱい並んでいて、これがナンドーズの特徴です。

The chicken wings are another highpoint--they do them in various levels of spiciness and because they are flame grilled, they are supposed to be pretty healthy.

鶏肉も特徴で、グリルされていてある程度健康的だって。

Finally, we shared chicken livers peri-peri, which was quite an experience for a vegetarian. That is my iron intake for the year--back to the veggies!

辛いレバーも食べてしまった。菜食主義に早く戻らなきゃ！

The other day, I was innocently driving past Krispy Kreme. I haven't been in even once in the past six months...but this sign was on. L told me that this sign means they are making hot, fresh doughnuts NOW. So the car turned into the parking lot and stopped!  この間、よくないものを食べてしまった。「クリスピー・クリーム」の近くに通って、下記の看板を見た。Lが教えてくれたけどこの看板がライトアップしていればドーナツが焼きたてって。おいしそうーーーーと思いながら車が急に駐車所に入って泊まった！

入ってみると。。。 This was the sight that greeted our eyes...

 超面白かった！ The life cycle of a doughnut...

There's tonnes of flavours...種類がいろいろあったけど。。。

...but original glazed is best...オリジナルがいちばん！

Tea and popcorn! ポップコーンと紅茶！

Last weekend we hit the Guildford Mall. Guildford is the town next to Surrey and has a tea shop that one of our Eugene friends wanted to check out.  先週末、友達と近くにあるモールに行ってきた。きっかけが友達の大好きな紅茶ショップがモールにあったのです。　サリー市の隣のギルフォード市にあってちょっと大きなショッピングセンター。なんとなく船橋ららぽーとの感じがしたけどそっちまで大きくなかった。

There was an unbelievable range of white, green, black, herbal, and red (rooibos) teas. いろんな種類がザーと並んでいて名前も面白かった。

There is a sample in the top of every container lid so you can get an idea what kind of tea it will be.香りもたっぷり吸い込んでもOK。

We even had a cup of genmai tea made in this great contraption.  玄米茶をいっぱいいただきました。爽健美茶（そうけんびちゃ）がほしかったけどブランドだから無理です。

So you brew it in the top and filter it out of the bottom.
面白くない？

It was really delicious. おいしかった！

Next, L wanted popcorn so we went to a place with some great flavours. つぎ、Lさんはポップコーンがほしかった。種類はものすごーいあった。

 

L bought a bucket and we filled it with three types of popcorn! So much for the diet.  ポップコーンを バケッツに入れて買ってしまった！ダイエットは？

On the way out of the mall we saw this place--but luckily we had popcorn so we weren't tempted! Next time...モールにトルハウスというブランド店もあった。チョコがおいしいって。ポップコーンが十分あったのでチョコは別の日に。 

Last Sunday--Surrey・先週の日曜日：サリー市

Last weekend we dragged our Eugene friends on a walk in Watershed Park, here in Surrey. It was about an hour's walk through beautiful trees and undergrowth.   
先週の日曜日、友達と散歩したり、外食したりした。まずは近くの公園で散歩。１時間ぐらいかな。

We also drove them to the coast--to White Rock. それで２０分ぐらい車で行けばワイト・ロックと言うビーチに着く。きれいなところ。

You can see a mountain from the pier, but I forget the name of the mountain. Maybe Mount Baker, which is in the US, actually. 山も見える。アメリカにあるベーカー山かな。

The train heading south across the border also runs along the coastline. 米国行きの電車も通る。

Dinner was Vietnamese food...spring rolls...
夕飯はベトナム料理。春巻き。。。

Chicken and rice...Vietnamese style...鶏肉を食べた人もいた。

And I had the no-meat pho...absolutely divine... 
私は肉のないフォーをおいしく食べた。
