この銀行すごい。。。Viva Canadian banking viva!

今日やっとカナダの口座を開いた。この銀行は本当にすごい。今夜７時までやっていて信じられなかった。午後６時半に銀行にいけるなんて。。。南アフリカだと午後３時までやっていて、アメリカはほとんど５時まで。それでもすごいと思ったけどやっぱりカナダの勝ち。（今まで一番やっている銀行は香港で見た。営業２４時間だって。さすが香港！）

OK, I have banked in South Africa, Japan, and America, but I have to say that my new credit union takes the cake. It's open until 7pm on weekdays! How can you beat that? Well, if you live in Hong Kong, some banks are open 24 hours, but this is good enough for me!

ラザニアを作った！Made lasagne...

I know....there might be too much international cooking going on...but I had a craving...And seeing as the journey is supposed to be more important than the destination, I thought I'd take you along for the ride (the destination wasn't half bad, let me tell you!)

変だけど最近料理を作るのが大好き。冬だから？歳かな？まいいか。。。夕べ、ラザニアを作りました！自分で言うのが悪いかもしれないけどおいしかったよ！ワインと一緒であれば。。。

今週はガーフィールドになるかな。。。And my plans for the rest of the week are...

エチオピア料理

やった！エチオピア料理を作りました！

去年、エチオピアに行ったときすばらしい料理ばかりいただいた。レンズ豆の「シロー」という食べ物にすごいはまった。シロー粉を持って帰って、昨日やっと作りました。インジェラはエチオピアの主食でテフ粉平たいパンです。ここでテフ粉は買えないのでインジェラに似ているものを作りました。クレープみたいなもので全部手で食べます。エチオピア人じゃないけどなんとなくおいしかったと思う。

Check it out! I made Ethiopian food! I brought the "shiro" powder back from a visit to Addis Ababa last year but only just found the time to make it. The shiro on the left (off-white) is not spiced but the shiro on the right (orange colour) is quite piquant. The crepe-like bread on the bottom is faux injera. Injera is made with a grain called teff which I cannot get here. But I found a recipe which brings the taste and consistency pretty close to teff so this was a fun meal which we ate with our hands.

(I know--millions of Ethiopian women make this every day so it is not a big deal but I was still pretty proud of myself!)

土曜日楽しかった！A Fun Saturday

土曜日に友達が遊びに来ました。サリー市にあるクレセント・ビーチに行きました。寒くて風が強かったので散歩などしなかったけど景色がとてもきれいだった。

A friend came up to visit on the weekend so we went to a lovely beach in Surrey. It was pretty chilly weather so after a brief glimpse at the view we headed for food...

山も見えた。

それで面白いバーを見つけた。

「釣った」というフィッシュ・バーでとてもおいしかった。

We found a lovely little fish bar right on the beach...

フィッシュが信じられないほどおいしかった。

...but the fish was out of this world. Absolutely fantastic!

Between the food and the view, it was an amazing lunch.

Just in case anyone is wondering, yes, I am still eating.  Today was a glorious South African start to the day with Iwisa mielie meal porridge. With milk and honey of course.

はいはい。。。ちゃんと食べています。今日は懐かしい南アフリカの朝食だった。ともろこしで作られたおかゆみたい。トウモロコシ粥だって。なるほど。「www.alc.co.jp」に感謝！おいしくみえないかもしれないけど本当においしいよ。言っていることを信じて！

And dinner? Crabcakes with snap peas and capers. And a glass of wine, of course.夕飯はカニで作られた「クラブ・ケーキ」だった。カニがパン粉やたまねぎと混ぜて揚げ物です。これもワインといただければ結構おいしいと思う。

やっと晴れてきた！The lure of a sunny day...

雨が四日間降り続いてきたので今日の晴れは信じられないほどうれしいことだった。
It has been raining for four days straight so I made the most of the sunny day. Took a long walk along the Greenway north towards the mountains.

久しぶりの乾燥した一日に散歩して来た。電灯を見逃せば山がきれいです。

いろな動物うもいた。お昼は何の会議だったかな。。。

ウサギちゃんの文化は個人主義かな。アメリカのバーニーかな。そうするとアヒルちゃんたちは日本の？

カナダの切手・Sorting out stamps...

今日面白い切手を見つけた。カナダの友達が５年前ぐらい、日本でくれた。カナダのお相撲さん切手だった。日本からアメリカ経由カナダまで持ってきたみたい。「じゃー、使おう」と思った。でも、郵便局で聞いてみればはがきでも６１セント切手が必要。お相撲さんごめん。ちょっと面白くない切手を買わなければいけなかった。

About five years ago, when I was living in Japan, a Canadian friend gave me some stamps celebrating sumo. I never dreamt that I would carry them with me to America and now to Canada. When I found them the other day I decided to send her something. Unfortunately even a lowly postcard now costs 61 cents to send. So I had to buy other stamps. I guess I will just have to hang on to the sumo wrestlers.

運動とご褒美・Fitness and Foam

毎日、天気がよくないので外で運動するのが難しい。それで今週から家で一生懸命運動スケジュールを工夫した。一番楽しいのはDDRです。

雪が溶けた・The retreat of the snow...

雪国がやっと緑に戻った。草に雪が残っていたのが時に好きだった。

The snow has retreated and the grass is peeking back out.

雪が溶けても食欲はなかなかなくならない。。。朝ごはんでも夕飯。。。

Of course, the retreat of the snow didn't take my appetite with it...

シアトルに行かなかった。。。So much for the Seattle weekend

今週末シアトルに行く予定だった。あいにく天気が悪くなって行くのをやめた。

シアトル空港がクローズになって、学校も休校、とまる予定のホテルは停電に巻き込まれて週末に閉まっていた。それでバンクーバーからシアトルまでの「I-5」という高速道路が氷や風倒木で通れなかった！

はい。。。わかった！行かないも！

I was supposed to be heading to Seattle to spend the weekend with friends. Then the big storm hit. Sea-Tac Airport closed, public schools closed, the hotel we were supposed to stay at was caught up in a power outage and forced to turn customers away. And then there were sections of the I-5 between Vancouver and Seattle that were closed because of freezing rain and downed trees. Guess I am staying put this weekend!

コインランドリーで大発見！ Treasure in a coin laundry?

初めてのカナダ洗濯。家に洗濯機がないのでコインランドリーを訪ねた。１０ドル紙幣を硬貨に換えて面白いのがありました。

I finally did some laundry...at a coin laundry because I don't have a washing machine. After changing 10 dollars into coins, I made a marvellous discovery.

２００４年に発行して「思い出す」が書いてある。間中にヒナゲシが付いている。イギリスではヒナゲシは１１月に第一次・第二次世界大戦の死者をしのんで身に着けるものです。カナダもそう。ランドリーでつかっちゃいば失礼！

This quarter was minted in 2004 in honour of Remembrance Day. Would be kind of disrespectful to put it in a washing machine!

Yes, it's been another cold few days and we've been having snow off and on. This was the sight as I exited this morning...

日本風パスタ？ Japanese-style pasta?

赤坂にあったJCCPで働いていたとき、近くのパスタ屋さんによく行きました。好きなのは明太子だった。のりがちょっと振りかけて信じられないほどおいしかった。昨日、パスタを作ったときあの明太子パスタを思い出した。のりを加えれば日本風？（おいしかったけど明太子のほうが最高）

One of my favourite lunch places when I worked in Tokyo was a little pasta shop around the corner from my Akasaka office. It was old-style Japan in ambience and the only thing on the menu was spaghetti. Some had traditional Italian sauces but mostly it was Japanese style. They were amazing. My favourite was "mentaiko" which is fish eggs. It came in a creamy sauce with seaweed sprinkled on top. Before you judge, let me take you there sometime. Really--you'd love it too.

Yesterday's lunch doesn't even compare but at least I tried.

一日中雪が断続的に降り続きそう。。。Looks like it's gonna snow on and off all day...

じゃ、しょうがない！コーヒーをいっぱい作ってから読むことにします！雪に乾杯！

Apparently I have no choice but to hole up with a couple of good books and a big mug of coffee!(I love snow)

追伸　ママが送ってくれた本です！この本のシリーズ、大好き。一番目の「ハンガー・ゲーム」を二日間で読み終えた！二番、三番目、雪国でがんばりまーーーす！

ちゃんと食べている。。。Yes, I'm eating...

お母さんなどからは最近「食べているの」って電話がかかって来る。３８歳だよ！でも、永遠にママだな～。ちゃんと食べています。果物、野菜、ポテトチップ。。。（笑）。

A few people have called to make sure I am keeping myself well fed up here. To date I have tried Vietnamese, Italian, Chinese, and French food out and have been pretty industrious at home...

That juice is cranberry, orange, and beetroot! Sooo good!

ベークドポテトにヨーグルト、サーモン、パースリー。
スープはかぼちゃ！
Baked potato with yoghurt, smoked salmon, and parsley. With butternut soup on the side!

サーモン、ケーパース、オランデーズソースのエッグ・ベネディクトとオレンジジュース。ご馳走様でした！
Eggs Benny with salmon and capers and a tall glass of OJ. Yum!

Quick tour of the place ・アパートへどうぞ！

アメリカのアパートと比べたらちょっと小さいけど大原のほうよりずっと大きいです！

Granted, it is smaller than the apartment in the US, but it is a LOT bigger than some places I rented in Japan! Photos below show the living room (the bike lives there because I don't want it outside), kitchen-dining area, corridor, study, and main bedroom. I decided against a bathroom shot but even that room is nice.
