At this rate I am never going to tell you about my US trip! I keep getting distracted by work and great music. This is a fabulous song and a great video. まだまだユージーンの投稿できていない。ごめん。仕事などで忙しくて。いいのは大好きな音楽がどんどん耳に入ってきている。家で仕事をするのはやっぱりつらくない。楽しいことに近いかも！どう思う。。。この歌？

Oh Canada...カナダ大好き！

I still have to download my photos from the five fabulous days down south. In the meantime, this is a form I received about coverage for pharmaceuticals. I love the broad definition of spouse: "if you are married or living in a marriage-like relationship"...sometimes I just love Canada...アメリカでとった写真はまだカメラからダウンロードしていない。とりあえずこの間もらった郵便について話します。保険会社からの連絡だけど面白いのは配偶者のこと。カナダでは配偶者は「結婚している方々か結婚のような関係で暮らしているカップルである」。すごいじゃ！

行ってきた！I'm baaaaaack...

Yes, I am back. Yes, I have missed a few blog days. Yes, I will catch up....tomorrow...

戻りました。ブログをちょっとサボっていた。明日からまた書く。。。かも。。。

I left early on Wednesday last week and drove seven hours on one tank of gas, traversing sun, rain, snow, a mildly crowded border post, an annoyingly active lift bridge, and two nature breaks, to arrive in Eugene, Oregon exhausted but in one piece. 

先週の水曜日、レンタルカーを使って米国のオレゴン州までドライブした。珍しかったけどユージーンは３月なのに雪が降っていた！サリー市からユージーン市まで７時間かかった。

I got back yesterday (Monday) and have felt like this ever since...

昨日、カナダへ戻った。今日でも疲れ切った。。。

Apparently I am not as young as I used to be...heading back to bed...more tomorrow on the great US adventure...やっぱり歳だね！明日また投稿します！

You can run but you can't hide・逃げても無駄だ！

I got a letter the other day from the Revenue Services of BC and my first thought was "I only just got here and already you want taxes from me?" It was actually my March and April provincial medical services bill. Pretty reasonable, I thought. I'll let you know value for money if/when I get sick ;-D  

この間国税庁郵便物があった。カナダに３ヶ月もたっていないのにもう税金払わなきゃの？と思った。 　実は州の医療保険の請求書だった。３月と４月は高くないと思っている。お医者さんに診てもらわないと価値が理解できないね。　(別に理解しなくてもいいかも）

Oh, and in case you thought I was done with food uploads...I'm not.  After I paid my MSP bill, I made a lovely lunch (if I do say so myself). It was a delightfully marinaded white fish with brown rice, kidney beans, pineapple, raisins, and corn. How is THAT for healthy (with a stick!)

Walking hat・散歩する時にかける帽子

ハリーポッターはソーティング・ハットがあって。。。

I have a Walking (sometimes, rarely, Running) Hat!  Actually, I have two versions--one for sun/rain and one for those cold, nasty but dry days. I figured out that if I only walk when it is sunny and dry, I will NEVER go outside in Surrey. It is cold and rainy a lot. But if I have a cap on, the rain doesn't get in my eyes. So I get out there rain or shine, wet or dry...mostly...　　
私はウォーキング・ハットがある。散歩するときにかける帽子を二部持っている。ここは雨がよく振るところです。降っていない日でも結構寒いか風が吹いている。完璧な日を待ていれば散歩する機会は永遠に来ない！雨が降っていればキャップを使います。なぜかと言うと雨から目を防ぐからです。青い帽子は寒い日にかける。

So, armed with my trusty Walking Hat, I get out pretty much every day. I have been monitoring my steps for a couple of years now and was amused at the monthly average for this month. 88 is a very lucky number in Japan so I guess my Walking Hat has some pretty impressive power...

そうするとほとんど毎日ちょっとでも散歩している。いい運動になっています。歩数計を毎日ポケットに入れて、毎日任天堂DSでチェックしている。三月の月平均は８８８８歩だから面白いナーと思った！帽子はやっぱりパワーある！ 

日曜日のドライブ・Took a drive last Sunday

Sooo...I am catching up again. This is a quick recap of last Sunday's drive up through Vancouver and along the Sea-To-Sky Highway to Squamish. It was a cloudy day but a delightful drive.

先週の日曜日、バンクーバーの北のほうにドライブしてきた。いくところは別になかったけど結局きれいな場所を見つけた。片道、家から１時間ちょっとのドライブがとても楽しかった。

And some beautiful views of mountains in the back. バンクーバーの来たの山がよく見える。。。

And the Sea to Sky highway runs right along the water--simply beautiful. バンクーバーの北にある高速度道路は「海から空へ」と言うのです。名前分かるよね。。。

 

After about an hour or so we got to the sleepy little village of Squamish. 一時間ちょっと運転するとスクァーミッシュ町があります。

Even on a cloudy day, it was beautiful.

こもっていた一日だったけどきれいなところだと分かった。

 

But pretty soon we started needing a warm place to refresh.

外が寒かったので暖かいところを探しして。。。

And we found the perfect place...やっぱりパッブだ！

They brew a lot of beers here, but this was the one I chose...

いろんなビールを醸造（じょうぞう）するパッブです。

An award winning red ale...just lovely.... 
私が選んだのはこのものです。。。赤っぽくてとてもおいしかった。

And what goes better with beer than poutine (with gravy on the side)...  ビールによく合うのはこの間説明したプーティンです。グレービーが別であれば最高。

The drive back was lovely...帰りの夕日。

We laughed...so there is no hope in Surrey? 

あれ？サリーは希望 なし？

And where do Blondes exit the highway? This segregation has got to stop... もっと笑ったのはこの看板。この出口は栗色の髪の毛の人用？金髪は？

Ah yes, the nationalist fervour is alive and well up here, too...how is THIS for a big flag?! ホテルの上に信じられないほど大きい国旗！愛国心はカナダにもあるか。

大好きなランドリーデー・The joy of clean sheets

Yep, it was that time of the month again...laundry day. There is no place to put a washer/dryer in the apartment so I let stuff build up and then go once a month (or so) to a nearby Chinese laundry. The up side is I don't have to feel guilty about stuff in the laundry basket. The industrial washers and dryers also get a month's load done in an hour, tops!  Next month, I am trying out the Greek restaurant next door while my socks dry.

アパートに洗濯機がないので外のコインランドリーを毎月に一回ぐらい行く。北アメリカで、外で服を干す人たちは今まであっていない。何でだろう。まあ。。。郷に入っては郷に従え。。。今度は洗濯する間に隣のギリシャ料理屋さんに行って見ます！

And the best part about big dinners...土曜日の夕飯の続き。。。

I love big dinners here, because whatever you cannot eat, you can pretty much take home.日本と違って、外食をすれば食べられないものを持ち帰りできる。

I really enjoyed my leftovers from Saturday. Unfortunately the bread pudding and B-52 coffee didn't make it home with me, but the salmon was excellent again tonight.　残念ながらデザートは土曜日に全部食べ終わった。サーモンは二回目でもおいしかった！

End of winter dinner・冬終わり夕飯？

Last Saturday we went out to a lovely and rather fancy restaurant nearby, called The Old Surrey.  They were celebrating the impending end of winter so we thought we would join in and help the celebrations along.  The menu is at the link below. この間の土曜日に特別な夕飯を食べに行った。冬がもうそろそろ終わりなので近くのおしゃれレストランが特別メニューを提供した。「オールド・サリー」と言うレストランでこれが特別メニュー：

We sat down and noticed even the butter was enticing....so much for counting calories...!

座ってみるとバッターでもきれいです。危ないナーーーーと思った！

 

We started with an "amuse bouche"that was compliments of the chef. Escargots in parmesan and garlic. Surprisingly lacking in taste...

最初はシェフが無料で作ってくれたエスカーゴーだった。味あまりなかったけど。。。

I had the spinach salad....次、私はほうれん草サラダで。。。

And L had the soft shell crab。。。友達がカニ天ぷらを注文した。

I moved on to a delightful lemon-maple syrup salmon...
次、私はサーモン。。。

And L had the veal。。。友達は子牛の肉。
(最初、「講師の肉」を書いた。おいしくなさそう！）

I finished up with the best bread and butter pudding ever created (second only to my mom's version, of course)  最後、私のデザートは大好きな「ブレッド・プリン」 。プリンじゃないね。。。日本にはないけどなんと言えばいいんだろう。ものすごくおいしかった。ママが作ったの以来一番おいしかったかも。

And L had the B-52 coffee, full of Kahlua, Grand Marnier, Bailey's, and calorie-free cream! 友達はB52こーヒーを頼んだ。アルコールがいっぱい入っていておいしかった！

(実はアルコールがありすぎて友達が飲めなかったので私が飲んでしまった！） It was so strong that I drank most of it--we wouldn't want it to go to waste.

今日の気持ち・Song for the day

今日は病気で寝るしかできなかった。でも、なんとなくこの歌が心に響いていた。字幕がなくてごめん。。。有名な南アフリカ人の作曲家が作った歌です。このバージョンはチャリティー用でいろんな南アフリカ人の音楽家が一緒に歌っていてもっと楽しい感じです。タイトルは「Spirit of the great heart」です。

I felt pretty crappy today so didn't do as much as I wanted. But for some reason the following song has been bouncing about in my head all day. This is a charity version of the Johnny Clegg classic. Enjoy.

Great evening in Vancouver・バンクーバーで過ごした夜

I spent a delightful evening in Vancouver with a friend from Japan. More tomorrow when I have defrosted. For now, I leave you with the delightful cup of Colombian hot chocolate that warmed my soul after my chilly walk home from the bus stop. Nighty night!

日本で作った友達とすばらしい午後をバンクーバーで過ごした。雨が降って寒い時間だったけどとても楽しかった。明日もっと書きますが今はコロンビアで買ったココアを飲んでから寝てしまいます。お休み！

彼女が泊まっているアパートはすごい！彼はアーチストで銅の鐘を造っている。So, I met my friend in Vancouver and we hung out at the apartment she's staying at for a week. Her friend makes the most amazing copper bells.

The apartment was stunning -- lots of plants and light -- a true artist's studio.

夕飯はおいしかったけど中はなんだったか覚えていない！　We went for a walk and had a really nice meal. I had something in pita with the feelgood drink of the gods.
 
彼女はファラフェルなどタブーリを。
She had falafel with tabouli and rice.

バクラバを食べたかったけど我慢した！　We were brave and courageous and did NOT have baklava. Ah well...missed opportunities.

帰りはスカイトレインやバス。交通機関大好き！
I took the SkyTrain and a bus home--loving public transport (if not the rain).

忘れない。。。We won't forget...

選択で困る・Ah, the burden of choice...

Sometimes having too many choices in life makes things more difficult. Take my morning coffee choices. There are about seven different types of coffee in my freezer. I know...tough life. But sometimes I don't want to have to decide. I just wanna cup of pre-breakfast perk.  So I concocted my own brew of Tully's with some of the Beirut Blend I brought back from Jordan thrown in for good measure. And when that is not good enough...

私はチョイスがあまり好きじゃない。ちょっと選択できたらいいけど冷凍庫に７種類のこーヒーがある。ありすぎて選択できない！この間ヨルダンから持って帰ったコーヒーをタリーズのこーヒーとちょっと混ぜてみた。悪くはなかったけど。。。

 ...I hit the local Starbucks. Their oat bars are GRRRRREAT!　。。。やっぱりスターバックスのほうがおいしいです。スターバッのオーツバーもおいしいいいい！大進め！

Things I ate (and drank) today・いただいたもの！

Today started out pretty healthily, with a delightful bowl of fresh raspberries...今日は健康を目指したけどちょっと失敗した。

ラズベリーが健康のピークだったかも。

But then things deteriorated, my willpower wavered, and I attacked a helpless chocolate bar. Why didn't I know about these when I lived in the US?　最悪はこのチョコ。信じられないほどおいしかった！アメリカに住んでいたときこのチョコ知らなかった。カナダで買えないことはちょうラッキー！

Dinner was not all bad, with a fruit smoothie somewhere in there...夕飯はチプスやスムージーでそんなにダイエットに悪くないけど。。。

But the after-dinner drink was sinful...and delightful (picture taken earlier in the day)　梅酒飲んじゃった！おいしかったけどカロリーが心配！明日からもっと運動！
