ガン治療の月・Cancer Cure Month

April is Cancer Month in Canada and the UK. I started seeing yellow daffodils on people's clothing and it reminded me that they do that in the UK, too. My mom donates money every year and then sends us daffodil pins--thanks, mom! It's nice how similar Canada and the UK are. I didn't see this in the U.S.--they have different events, I guess. ちょっとぎりぎりの投稿だけど４月はがん治療の月です。カナダやイギリスでガンの団体に寄付して、(偽者の）ラッパズイセンをもらってつける習慣がある。アメリカでこのキャンペーンがなかったのでまたカナダとイギリスの関係が強いなーと思った。ラッパズイセンを付けまーす！ Putting on my daffodil and heading out to play in Vancouver--photos may take some time to get up here.

友達、友達、友達！Friendship...

A VISITOR! Yes, I have a guest for 10 days. A delightful friend is coming all the way from Japan to spend Golden Week in western Canada. She has been to the east side of the country before but this is her first foray to the west coast. So, of course, I spent a bunch of hours doing this... ゴールデンウィークに友達が日本から遊びに来る！東カナダに尋ねたことあるけど今回は西のようです！一緒にヴァンクーバー周辺で遊ぼうと思う！私も超楽しみ！じゃ。。。友達が来るので。。。数時間これをやった。。。当たり前でしょう。。。

And now it is time for bed!疲れちゃった！お休み！

Yaaaaay friendship! (and a clean place!)　と言うまでもなく、友達が来るのは最高！それで、私も観光客になるのでいいゴールデンウィークになる！遊ぼう！

The other day when I was out picking some stuff up, I saw this. It was in one of the local shopping centres and made me feel kind of nostalgic for my childhood. Well, BC has some of that, too.  この間買い物していたとき、ドバイ宝石商を見た。懐かしいなーと思った。ドバイで育ったのでサリー市と小さいごろがちょっと結ばれている感じがした。いいなーーー、BC州！

仕事のビデオ・Work video

For those of you that wonder what I do, or did, last year? This is it! I was lucky enough to be part of the BIDC (Building an Inclusive Development Community) project. I traveled to Jordan, Ethiopia, and Colombia doing training and meetings on how to include people with disabilities in USAID (United States Agency for International Development) programs. The MIUSA （Mobility International USA) team made an information video. The narrator is a friend--Susie Grimes. The videographer is another friend--Jeff McBride. I do pop into the video (8:29) but don't blink or you'll miss me...Enjoy!

去年の仕事のビデオです。「モビリティー・インターナショナル・USA」という非政府組織で働いている。去年はBIDCプロジェクトがメインだった。BIDCは「どんな人でも受け入れようとする地域社会を作る」様な意味です。主なメッセージが「障害者を忘れず、開発はみんなのため」です。　字幕は英語だけでごめん。。。ナレーターは友達。ビデオ撮影かも友達。私は一回出ると思う。。。（早いけど８：２９ぐらい）

春の歌・Singing about spring

春の歌って言えば何が思い浮かぶ？私だったら二つがピンと頭に出てくる。Spring in Japan is really important. I know I am a bit late to write about it but I am only starting to feel the spring now--and even then, I still don't really feel it.  Maybe it is different in Japan.  There are two songs that come to mind when I think about spring in Japan: one is by Yumi Matsutoya (Yuming). It is called "Haru yo, Koi" (Come spring...).  Even without the lyrics, you can really feel the song in the harmonies and power of her voice.

１９９７年３月１日に来日。それから日本の春を始めて経験した。そのとき日本語が分からなかったけどこの歌が絶対流れていた。その大切の経験のサウンドトラックの中に入っている。１９９８年２月２８日に南アフリカに帰った。そのとき日本語がある程度分かってきた。この歌が大事になった。今でも心の中に入っている。

 

福山雅治の桜坂は１９９９年に日本に戻ってきてから好きになった歌。２０００年の春にリリースされて、また日本の春のすばらしさが歌と結ばれている。 The second "spring song" for me is by Masaharu Fukuyama. It is called "Sakurazaka," which means "cherry blossom slope or hill." I uploaded a version with English translation so you can feel the beauty of the song a bit more.

英語だと春の歌って特にないと思う。サマーだとよくあるかも。。。７月の投稿楽しみにしてね！I cannot think of any memorable "spring" songs in English...anyone?

Happy Earth Day! アースデー

今日はアースデーだから昨日帰ったときの花の写真をアップしようと思った。涼しいけど春がやっとう来たかな。Happy Earth Day!  I thought I would share some of the flowers I saw on the walk home yesterday...I wonder if spring has finally sprung. It is still pretty chilly up here, though...

Happy Vaisakhi! シーク教のお祭り

今朝、ドアでたたく音を聞いて、開いた。大家さんがおしゃれな格好をして、面白い情報を伝えてくれた。今日は大きなパレードがあって、シーク教のお祭りが近くに行っている。ちょっと困っていた。今日はたくさん仕事をするつもりだった。オンランで調べてみるとインド以外、サリー市のシーク祭りは世界の一番大きいかも。じゃ。。。仕事は後にしてお祭りを見に行った！天気もよかったので４５分ぐらい歩いていてなんてすばらしい眺めなのだろう！

I was supposed to work a lot today but luckily my landlord saved me from that fate. He knocked on my door this morning and told me about a huge parade right here in Surrey. I went online and  found out that this is the biggest Vaisakhi parade outside of India! I took a quick 45-minute walk and really enjoyed wandering around...

The year of reading・読書欲

今年はすごい読んでいる。なぜか分からないけど超楽しいです。修士論文を研究したり書いたりしたとき楽しみに読書する時間がなかった。去年、８ヶ国に回って、仕事ばかりやっていて読書する時間も少なかった。飛行機の中でがんばっていたのに。。。

I have been doing a lot of reading this year. I have had more time, I don't have to commute, and I haven't done the traveling I did last year. So far I have read 9 books in my 100 days in Canada. I just started book 10. So far so good...

今年は家で仕事をしていて通勤の時間がなくて自分の時間が多くなってよかった。カナダに引っ越してから９本も読み終わった！１００日に９本！どうかな。。。読みすぎ？

去年ハンガーゲームという本を３日間ぐらいで読んだ。すばらしい本です！一月にその話の続きを読んだ！ I read The Hunger Games last year and LOVED IT! My mom sent me books two and three in the series and I finished them in a week...

それでシリーズの最後の話しも読んだ！すばらしかった！お勧めです！Absolutely brilliant...I recommend all three!

次はジンバブエの話の二本。家族などの思い出の話とジンバブエの歴史が混ざって面白かった。Then I read a fantastic couple of books on Zimbabwe. They are personal memoirs of someone who grew up in Southern Rhodesia, which is now Zimbabwe.

私はザンビア生まれなのでこの話は個人的にも面白かったです。私の家族は違う道を歩いてきたけどこのようになれたかな。。。 I was born in Zambia so there is a lot in here that made me think about my own life and, but for a few twists and turns, how differently it could have turned out.

その次はエチオピアの話。去年エチオピアにすばらしい二週間をすごした。仕事が大変だったけどエチオピアの文化や人々について深い興味ができてこの本を読んで少し分かってきた。Next I read a spectacular book on Ethiopia. I loved Ethiopia when I was there last year so this was a good opportunity to learn more about the history and culture. A great read!

思い話の後は楽しい本を読むべきです。テリー・プラチェットの子供向けの本以外は大好きです。二本読んですばらしい旅だった！ After all that serious stuff I switched gears and read two Terry Pratchett books. He is magnificent. If you have never read a Discworld novel then you have missed out!

興味あればお勧めです！子供っぽいって思われるかもしれないけど社会風刺（ふうし）でとても面白い。 It might feel childish but if you wait for it you realise you are reading some pretty insightful social satire.

次は６０年代のアメリカの話だった。これもとても面白かった。映画も出ているけどまだ見ていない。Then I headed to the American south of the 1960s. There is a movie about this as well but the book is not to be missed. Excellent and informative read.

最後は９６５ページの歴史書説。１０世紀の英国を舞台に素敵な教会を建てたい男がいる。。。Finally, I just finished a fabulous book that took me back to the 1100s in England to follow the story of a man whose life dream it was to build a beautiful cathedral...Absolutely fantastic book about political intrigue, war, power and the lives of average people in that time and place.

昨日からはこの本。。。友達のお勧めです。友達が本を勧めると読みたくなるでしょう。読み終わったらいろんな話もできるし。今１０ページ目ぐらい。。。すばらしい作品だってもう分かっている。本ってすごいね！And now I am reading this...A friend recommended it. I am only on page ten but I already know it is going to be fantastic!

Does anyone have any other suggestions for a good book? 誰かほかの勧めあるの？

100 days in Canada! カナダの百日目！

As of today, I have been in Canada 100 days. I have actually been here since December 29th but the total doesn't count the days I was in the US for weekends, etc.  This is the 100th blog of the year to mark the 100th day in Canada! 今日でカナダに住んでいて百日間！１２月２９日に住みに来てあれからアメリカに入ったりしたけどカナダにいるのは合計で１００日間！

And how better to celebrate than with a lovely Pinot! Cheers!　
ワインで祝いしましょう！カナダに乾杯！

More food...また食べ物！

食べ物の話はちょっと久しぶりかな？(二、三投ぶりかな？）　I haven't done food in a while...well, that's about to change...

Recycling! リサイクル！

この間のビーチ散歩のときすごいものを見た。公園にあったリサイクルシステム！One of the great things we saw on our Crescent Beach was was this amazing recycling system!

太陽光発電のごみ圧縮機！！すごいでしょう！It's a solar-powered trash compactor, right there in the park!

More Easter・復活祭の続き

復活祭の話の続きがちょっと遅れていてごめん。バイキンランチだけではなく長い散歩もできた。家から２０分ぐらい車で行けばクレセントビーチと言うところがある。きれいでしょう。

Yes, I am really late with this post--trying desperately to catch up. We didn't just go for a buffet on Easter weekend. We also managed to get in a walk on Crescent beach.

お散歩の後おなかがすいたのでフィッシュアンドチップスをいただいた！The long walk worked up some appetites so we enjoyed the best fish and chips we've had in ages!

で、家に帰ったらまた食べた。アメリカで見つけられなかったけどカナダはイギリス系の国でよかった！復活祭に伝統的なものホットクロスバンが食べれてすごーーーくうれしかった！
And of course we ate more when we got home--Hot Cross Buns! Ah yes, the taste of Easter (for me)

A better day...with socks! 機嫌がよくなってきた

昨日と違って今日はすばらしい一日。晴れがやっと戻ってきたのでそれが理由の一つかも。９０分お散歩ができたママから新しい靴下も届いていいことばかり起こった。よかった！

Today was tonnes better than yesterday. I got more sleep...the sun came out...

 I got a walk in lovely new socks my mom sent. Pretty cute, huh?

 Anyway, I am better today--here's hoping the weather holds!

機嫌が悪い！Baaaad mood...

なぜか分からないけど機嫌が急に悪くなってきた。今日は朝６時から仕事が忙しくて寝る時間がちょっと足りないけど機嫌が悪くなる理由は特にない。お医者さんに診てもらったのでそれが原因のひとつかも。何とかやさしくない感じ。(ため息）　私は好き嫌いが厳しいかも知れないけどやさしくないお医者さんなんて私の人生にいらないもの！じゃ。。。しょうがない！

Yep...for some reason I hit a 'bad mood' wall today. Not sure why. Probably a lack of sleep combined with an early morning start to the day that just didn't have enough breaks in it. Then I went to a doctor who was surprisingly unfriendly and a little bit judgmental. It wasn't a big deal--I just wasn't in the mood.

 

カナダのお医者さん、もうチョイがんばってくれ！私はこれから寝るから「明日あるさ」。I suppose I just will hit the hay and hope I am in a better mood tomorrow. I promise to like Canada more then...

あ、寝る前、手作りスコーンをひとついただこうか。じゃ。。。笑顔が大きくなっている（お尻のサイズとともに） Ah, perhaps a homemade scone will help (these scones were made in my home but not by my hand...thanks L).  Oooh...the smile is bigger (and so is my derrière)...

面白い夕飯・Cereal for dinner

I spent ALL day in front of the computer because I had masses of work to do.  This led to a not particularly healthy day nutritionally speaking. Snacktime...今日は仕事が忙しすぎて料理を作る時間がまったくなかった。それで悪いものばかりを食べてしまった。おやつの時間。。。

And dinnertime....Cereal is surprisingly easy to prepare and shove in my mouth while working! Now I just need Domo to help me pick the flavour. Tonight was peanut butter...それで夕飯はシリアル！用意する時間が短くて食べるのも仕事しながらできる。どっちがおいしいかなどーもくん？

Dinner and work・今週末

昨日、ドバイの友達がサリーに遊びに来た。彼女は今バンクーバー市に住んでいて時々あっています。Lは豪華な夕飯を作ってくれて、たっぷりいただきました。友達はワイトワインを持ってきてくれてあれも楽しめた。A delightful Dubai friend came over for dinner and chit-chat last night. She lives in Vancouver now so we meet every now and again. L made a fabulous dinner of squash, fish, beans, almonds, and salad and there was FABULOUS white wine! (Thanks, E!)

今日は日曜日なのに仕事しなきゃ！じゃ、ジェリービーンを食べながら、がんばります！ And today it is back to the grind, but at least there are jelly beans to help the work go round.

Gold status! 金って大切？

I FINALLY RECEIVED MY STARBUCKS GOLD CARD!　It is not exactly the same as a gold credit card or frequent flyer status, but I will take what I can get! やっとスターバックスのゴールドカードが届いた。12月にゴールドレベルになったけどカードがなかなか届かなかった。クレジットカードのゴールドのほうがいいかもしれないけど私はそのような大人じゃないかも。

Triskaidekaphobics beware! 13恐怖症?

13恐怖症って本当にあるの？どうかな。。。あの病気になった人にあったことないけどどの感じかな。私は蛇が大嫌い。同じ感じかな。 Anyone know any triskaidekaphobics? Anyone have any bad luck this Friday the 13th? I didn't (touch wood). But it is not over yet... :-)

今日ちょっと買い物した。そのとき面白いのを思いついた。ドーナツのくりすぴクリームが会って。。。 I went shopping today and noticed something really fun. There was a Krispy Kreme (I did not go in)...

 その向こう側はシークの教寺院。。。On the other side of the road was a Sikh Temple...

 その向こう側はカナダマック。...And across from that was a Canadian MacDonald's

Easter buffet・復活祭のバイキン

イースターが復活祭と言うのは面白いね。当たり前だと思われちゃうけど私にとって面白い。イースターサンデーにシェラトンホテルに行っておしゃれなバイキンをいただきました。私もある意味で復活できたかな。。。This past weekend was Easter. While I am not religious, there IS a part of me that enjoys the ceremony and occasion...the eggs and chocolate are a bonus! We went to the Sheraton in nearby Guildford for a delightful brunch buffet. Warning--glorious food pics ahead!

最初はミモサ・カクテル。アメリカやカナダでミモサというけど南アフリカだとバックス・フィズと言う。ミモサは小さくて黄色い花です。写真に写っている花と違うけど。。。We started with mimosas. That is what the Americans and Canadians call orange juice mixed with champagne (sparkling wine). I grew up calling it Bucks Fizz. Interestingly, in Italy a mimosa is a little yellow flower but NOT the one in this picture.

これは花のミモサ。イタリアではミモサは３月８日の国際婦人デーのシンボルです。 This is a mimosa--the flower. In Italy it is the symbol of the March 8th International Women's Day.

最初の皿。おいしかった！THIS was my first plate...waffle, salmon, eggs benedict, mussels, scrambled eggs, fish...I tried to get it all in.

二枚目はランチっぽくておいしかった。一枚目のほうがよかったけど。私はやっぱり朝食好き！

Second plate was more like lunch with salads, cheeses, dim sum and MORE salmon!
